What is Gastrolief and what is it used for?
Gastrolief contains the active substance pantoprazole which blocks the ‘pump’ that produces stomach acid. Therefore it reduces the amount of acid in the stomach.
Gastrolief is used for the short-term treatment of reflux systems (for example heartburn and acid regurgitation) in adults. Reflux is the backflow of acid from the stomach into the gullet (food pipe) which may become inflamed and painful. This may cause symptoms such as a painful burning sensation in the chest rising up to the throat (heartburn) and a sour taste in the mouth (acid regurgitation).
What are proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and how do they work?
Gastrolief is a Proton Pump Inhibitor. Proton pump inhibitors reduce the production of acid by blocking the enzyme in the wall of the stomach that produces acid. The reduction of acid prevents ulcers and allows any ulcers that exist in the oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum to heal.

Handy Tips for Heartburn Sufferers
Exercise relieves stress which is a contributory factor to heartburn. Keeping active encourages healthy digestion. Physical activity promotes health digestion .Why not try a short walk, a 15 minute swim or perhaps take the stairs instead of using the lift or escalator.
There is evidence which proves that smoking may cause heartburn as the muscle between the oesophagus relaxes to such an extent that it allows stomach acid to return to the oesophagus. This action causes the burning sensation which is recognised as heartburn.
Rest after eating
Try not to eat your meal too quickly and enjoy your food taking time to digest afterwards. Also try to eat two to three hours before going to bed. Eating too quickly contributes to heartburn therefore enjoy your food and take time to digest each mouthful.
When taking medication particularly at night sit upright for at least 20 minutes before lying down as pills that are not completely digested in the stomach can also be the cause of heartburn. It is also important to take your medication at the same time every day.
